As the impact of kitten season begins to be seen, SPCA Otago is putting out the call for more fosterers.
SPCA Otago business development manager Kirsty Thomson said they had kittens on site and with fosterers and expected to get many more over the Christmas period and into the new year.
Ms Thomson said they were on the hunt for more volunteers who would be willing to take a few kittens into their homes this summer.
‘‘During the holidays especially, people go away and we can get short of foster families to help care for the little ones that are not big enough to put up for adoption.’’
Fosterers needed to be able to provide a clean, warm, confined area for the kittens to live in. SPCA Otago would supply food, bedding, litter trays and litter, she said.
SPCA Otago could not give an exact length of time an animal would need to be fostered, as animals arrived at a variety of ages, weights and states of health, but it would usually be up to two months, Ms Thomson said.
She also reminded people to desex their animals to reduce the volume of unwanted kittens.
