University holidays may feel more like a chillier version of summer camp for Dunedin students.

After months away during lockdown, many students are planning to stay in the city during the upcoming break.

University of Otago senior warden of colleges Jamie Gilbertson said, usually, most students returned home for the holidays but there were indications some colleges might be up to half full during the midyear break.

Colleges had a variety of events and activities planned and would be encouraging residents to be physically active and out and about in the community.

"Theme dinners, movie nights, trips to Moana Pool and outings will be held, along with activities such as running groups, yoga , tie-dying, quiz nights and scavenger hunts.

"Where colleges can, there may be volunteering and the aim is to keep residents active and engaged."

Semester one exams end on Wednesday, and semester two begins on July 6.
