Auctioning a rare Peterborough Canadian canoe made about 1920 means a ''step into the unknown'' but auction house manager Ronnie Proctor is optimistic about the outcome.

''It's something just a little bit different,'' Mr Proctor said.

The canoe was hand-made by the Peterborough Canoe Company, which was founded in 1892 in Ontario, Canada, and closed in 1961.

Mr Proctor said this ''amazing'' 4.8m-long canoe was believed to be one of only a few of its age left in the world, in this condition.

The canoe will be auctioned on Sunday.

It has been sitting in a boat shed at Waihola since its restoration in 1994.

Its position, hanging high on a boat rack in the shed, meant it survived last July's floods undamaged, he said.

The canoe and a slightly smaller yacht are being sold as part of a deceased estate, and it is understood they belonged to a former Sydney judge who lived at Waihola in retirement.

Mr Proctor said the canoe was ''a little bit special''.
