Candidate withdraws, leaving one standing for president

And then there was one. Nicholas Graves (18), a second-year commerce student, has withdrawn from the Otago University Students Association presidential race, leaving only one remaining candidate, Harriet Geoghegan.

Miss Geoghegan is a sitting association executive member, having been elected as a commerce representative at a by-election in March.

On Wednesday evening, the two candidates for the 2010 presidency took part in an debate on campus.

Mr Graves said that during that meeting he had been asked about his experience, his preparation for the campaign and his vision for the presidency.

He had been unable to answer the vision query adequately and realised he would be better to bow out of the presidential race, do more preparation and stand later for another post, such as a general member of the association executive, before seeking any higher office.

Association returning officer Simon Wilson confirmed Mr Graves had withdrawn.

There had been no complaints involving him.

Voting via the internet will begin at 12.01am on Monday and will end at 4pm on Thursday.

Under the association constitution, Miss Geoghegan will not be elected automatically, despite being the only candidate.

Voters can vote no confidence in any candidate or abstain from voting.
