A Dunedin woman received an unwelcome wake-up call after a car ploughed through her fence, nearly crashing into her bedroom.

Lynette Harris was woken by a loud noise outside her Victoria Rd home about 4am yesterday.

"I heard the screech of tyres, and then a bang," she said.

"I jumped out of bed thinking ‘Oh hell, someone’s been hurt’."

She raced outside to find a car had smashed through her fence, almost hitting her house.

The car had been driven away from the scene.

She saw the tail lights disappearing, and believed the car was either silver or white.

"It took out quite an area of the fence," she said.

"A few more inches, he would’ve mounted my balcony and been into my bedroom. It was quite close."

A few hours earlier she had heard cars doing burnouts in the area, but she was not sure if that was related to the crash at her property.

A police spokeswoman said police were called at 6.27am yesterday about the incident.
