The Dalmore Reserve in Pine Hill may not be a bountiful garden yet but yesterday the seeds were sown there for Dunedin's newest community garden.

Consent for the garden was granted late last year after a year of planning involving a team of Pine Hill residents and Northeast Valley Project members.

Speaking at the opening of the garden, Pine Hill resident Kelly Allen said the garden would be an important hub for the Pine Hill community.

"Kids have played here for generations ... I think it is really important that in Pine Hill we have somewhere to go that is peaceful and tranquil.''

The garden would be somewhere "bored kids'' could go to do something productive, she said.

Dunedin city councillor Jinty MacTavish said she hoped the garden would be an ongoing collaboration with the Northeast Valley community garden.

Mayor Dave Cull and Cr MacTavish officially opened the garden by planting oregano and pineapple sage plants.
