Otago University Canoe Club members (from left) Bella Uhl (22), Rani Cousens (19), Zoe Ashton (19) and Jutta Pihlamo (26) raise their paddles during a practice day in the water near the Otago Yacht Club, in Dunedin, yesterday.

Ms Uhl, an executive member of the 100-member canoe club and an experienced kayaker, said she took the other three women out for some practice before a club trip this weekend to the Rangitata River, near Geraldine, Canterbury.

All three "beginner girls" would be facing whitewater kayaking conditions for the first time — "a full-on weekend, but super fun" — necessitating some capsize recovery practice, as demonstrated by Ms Ashton (right).

The conditions on Otago Harbour yesterday were good, there was some wind but a lot of sunshine and the group was happy, she said.
