Yachting superstar Sir Russell Coutts will be watching when young sailors from around New Zealand compete on Otago Harbour later this month.

The America's Cup great, who honed his skills as a junior sailor at the Ravensbourne Boating Club, will be back in Dunedin for the O'pen Bic Nationals to be staged this Saturday and Sunday.

About 40 young sailors are expected to take part in the event, including two from Bermuda and one from Australia, supported by Sir Russell.

The former Team New Zealand skipper has been heavily involved in promoting the O'pen Bic class.

That included donating four of the high-performance sailing dinghies to the Ravensbourne Youth Yachting Trust, based at the Ravensbourne Boating Club, where Sir Russell is patron.

This month's national event would be based at the University of Otago's Aquatic Centre. Sir Russell will also run training workshops for the young sailors and give a talk.
