Freya Mckenzie (5, above), of Dunedin, tries on her mask during the Otago Art Society "Art Workshop for Kids" at the Wall Street Mall, in George St, while Alice Ballard (9, right), of Dunedin, creates a soap-carving at Otago Museum yesterday.

Both arts and craft activities for children were held on the first day of school holidays in Dunedin.

The Otago Art Society’s "Masks and Monsters" class yesterday was well attended, organiser Jenny Longstaff said.

"It’s been a good creative exercise and a bit of family bonding."

Otago Museum ran a soap-carving class and marketing manager Kate Oktay said it gave people the chance to make intricate creations.

"It’s essentially taking inspiration from our beautiful gallery, we’ve got the pounamu exhibition in there," she said.
