Alleged drunk driver caught at bottle store after chase

An alleged drunk driver was caught by police at a Dunedin bottle store after fleeing the scene of a crash yesterday evening.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said the man crashed his car on the Caversham Bypass motorway near the South Rd overbridge.

He fled the scene of the crash leaving his vehicle on the motorway but was spotted by a vigilant off-duty police officer who gave chase, Snr Sgt Dinnissen said.

A police dog team was alerted and shortly afterwards the man was caught at Super Liquor Andersons Bay.

The 40-year-old was taken to Dunedin Central Police Station where he was processed for excess breath alcohol.

Multiple charges were likely, Snr Sgt Dinnissen said.
