Gunshots were fired at a house in Loyalty St, Dunedin, yesterday in an apparent case of mistaken identity.
Police investigating the 4.30am incident completed a scene examination later in the morning.
In a statement, police said two gunshots were fired at the property.
Police did not believe the address was the intended target, but that ‘‘does not diminish the seriousness of what occurred’’, the statement said.
A spokeswoman said people were inside the property at the time, but could not say how police knew it was gunshots, or whether anything was struck by bullets.
A man in Loyalty St, where a house with a broken window could be seen, told the ODT it was ‘‘a case of mistaken identity’’.
Police said a dark-coloured vehicle was seen in the street at the time and left immediately afterwards.
