Dairy prices steady at latest auction

Global dairy prices barely moved at yesterday's globalDairyTrade internet auction held by Fonterra.

The trade weighted index, which measures changes in prices weighted by the product mix, was unchanged compared with the last auction two weeks ago, although contract prices for specific items did change.

Anhydrous milk fat (AMF) over all contracts increased 4.5%, butter milk powder fell 1.8%, skim milk powder fell 1.1% and whole milk powder was unchanged.

The average winning bidding price edged up to $NZ4816 ($US3542) from $NZ4553 ($US3506) a fortnight ago, driven by price rises from smaller-volume items.

Prices for three forward contract periods, January, February to March and May to July, show some stability.

Prices contracted for those periods for AMF were 4.4% higher than the sale two weeks ago, butter milk fat prices were 1.8% lower and skim milk powder was 1.1% lower.

Whole milk powder prices were unchanged.

The sale attracted 119 bidders, of which 83 bought product.
