Dunedin motorists now have a new tool to help them dodge a bumpy morning commute in the city.
The Dunedin City Council has begun publishing a list of planned roadworks across the city on its website, which will be updated each week.
Cr Kate Wilson, chairwoman of the council's infrastructure services committee, said the initiative was a response to requests from community boards and the public, and was modelled on a similar approach in Southland.
The aim was to give people ''a running idea'' of what was happening around the city, so motorists could plan accordingly.
''It just gives people better information about what they can expect from the DCC.''
The aim was for the online list to include all planned roadworks on local roads, ''but there will always be work that we need to do for emergency work'' which may not be, she said.
Also, the list did not yet cover the city's state highway network, although the New Zealand Transport Agency published highway information on its own website.
Cr Wilson said the council's ''experiment'' was aimed at gauging public opinion and could be altered in future, with more detail provided or greater use of social media to provide the public with the information.
''It's a fairly substantial list, and it's costly to advertise it, so we've put it up once and we'll see what people need.''
