Council candidacy information event to be held

People considering becoming a council candidate can attend an information evening in Dunedin next week.

"If you’re thinking of standing for election, this is a great opportunity to learn more about the ins and outs of the election process and the roles and responsibilities of being an elected member," Dunedin City Council deputy electoral officer Robyn Dillon said.

"Prospective candidates will hear how council is structured, the skills they need to be an effective elected member and information about the nomination process," she said.

The candidate information evening is on Thursday at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery auditorium from 6pm.

Those attending will hear from city council electoral officer Anthony Morton and council chief executive Sandy Graham, as well as from representatives of the Otago Regional Council.

Candidate nominations open on Friday next week and close on August 1.

Postal voting starts in September and the polls close on October 11 at noon.

"Local elections allow communities to make democratic decisions about who leads them and to influence the way the city grows and develops," Ms Dillon said.

To stand for election, candidates must be a New Zealand citizen, enrolled to vote and nominated by two people.

"We’re also urging all eligible Dunedin voters to make sure they’re enrolled to vote." — APL
