The fate of the planned cable car project in Mornington Park will be known next week.

The Dunedin Heritage Light Rail Trust is seeking consent to build a temporary site to house three heritage cable cars with a view to building a permanent museum and cable car line in coming years, once funding is secured.

Dunedin City Council resource consents manager Alan Worthington confirmed yesterday  a decision on the application by an independent commissioner was expected next week.

He could not speculate on what the decision would be.

Trust spokesman Neville Jemmett said he was anticipating the consent would be granted and work to build the temporary structure could then take place.

He was excited by the prospect, as it had been a long time coming, he said.

"I have had six months of having everything chucked at us" he said.

"Everything has been chucked at us including the kitchen sink.

"We have had six site shifts."

Once approved, the trust intended to have the building constructed and Mr Jemmett envisaged it would be erected by the end of September.

"This is a real big step," he said.

Having the building would allow the trust to showcase its vision to the city’s residents.

The cost of the whole project to reinstall the cable car line was estimated at $19million in 2012.

A decision on the temporary building is expected next Friday.
