Drivers in fatal crash face charges

The drivers of two vehicles involved in a fatal crash in St Kilda in January will face charges.

The decision to prosecute follows a five-month police investigation into the accident in which Simon Paul Charlton (11) was killed on Richardson St as he and a friend took a ride around the block inside the closed boot of Simon's father's car.

The boys were flung from the Ford Mondeo sedan when it was involved in a collision with a Subaru about 10.30pm.

Simon was thrown through a wooden fence and died at the scene.

His 12-year-old friend, Harrison Kemp, was seriously injured when he landed on the footpath.

David Charlton (42) has been charged with careless driving.

A 24-year-old Auckland man, the driver of the Subaru, is charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death and four counts of dangerous driving causing injury.

Both men have been summonsed to appear in the Dunedin District Court within three weeks.

Neither man could be contacted for comment last night.
