Dunedin Women's Open contender Hayley Coates has qualified in the top eight of the Hyundai Pro Tour National Surf Champs at St Clair on the second day of competition.
Up against a strong field in heat 4, Coates surfed well in difficult conditions to finish in second place on 7.63 points, to Gisborne surfer Airini Mason who scored an impressive 11.9.
The semi-finals will be held on Saturday.
