Earnings from Student Job Search placements rise 39%

University of Otago students employed through Student Job Search (SJS) earned $2 million in paid work in the first three months of this year, a 39% increase on the corresponding period last year.

Figures released by the Otago University Students' Association also showed the average amount earned per placement rose by 62% from $1216 in the first three months of last year to $1966 this year.

However, the number of students placed into work was down by 14%, with 1128 placements this year compared with 1311 last year.

OUSA president Logan Edgar said the figures showed students were "hard-working".

"It's not all parties for students. It's about balance and we're delighted our SJS service provides our students with the jobs they need."

OUSA student support manager Matt Tucker said he hoped the increase in the amount earned would mean a decrease in demand for the OUSA's food bank.

"Our student food bank usage increased 64% in 2011.

"We're hoping that 2012 will see students better off, and SJS is one of our services that can really help."

SJS is a student-governed organisation. In October last year, SJS closed its Dunedin office, shifting its recruitment and job-placement operations to an online-based service.
