Elderly woman seriously injured in accident

An 80-year-old woman was freed from her vehicle and taken to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries after her car rolled in central Dunedin yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the single-vehicle accident in Alva St where the woman was trapped in her rolled car.

Both ends of Alva St were blocked for an hour.

A police spokeswoman said they were alerted to the crash about 4.25pm. There was a heavy police presence at the scene, where Fire and Emergency New Zealand firefighters and St John officers worked to free the woman trapped in the blue 2018 Suzuki Ignis.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident, which happened between High and Stafford Sts.

The police Serious Crash Unit has been advised.
