Emma in Australian opera

Dunedin soprano Emma Fraser has been cast in her first Australian opera, in Sydney.

Ms Fraser (34) has just started rehearsals as a member of the chorus for the Opera Australia production of Italian opera Madama Butterfly.

The Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour production starts on March 21 and runs until April 13.

Ms Fraser will be one of 60 artists, including three other New Zealanders, performing on a purpose-built stage on Sydney Harbour.

She moved to Sydney last May from Auckland, where she worked with New Zealand Opera.

Ms Fraser went to Maori Hill School, Otago Girls' High School and the University of Otago, where she studied music.

She spent two years in Perth at the Australian Opera Studio and lived in London before returning to New Zealand.
