The waharoa will feature as a centrepiece at the internal entranceway to the museum galleries, Toitu exhibition developer William McKee said.
The work is being carved in Riverton by James York, a Ngai Tahu master carver, who started the project late last year.
The carving will include elements that depict migration stories and the coming together of peoples.
Much of the timber being used was recycled native timber from Quarantine Island, in Otago Harbour.
The project was being funded by the Otago Settlers Association and Ngai Tahu.
The waharoa was due to be installed in time for summer.
