Part of the Esplanade at St Clair is closed until August 12 as a sewage pipe is laid to connect an apartment development to the wastewater system.

Dunedin City Council planning and delivery manager Tom Dyer said the pipe needed to be laid from the building, along the Esplanade, and around the corner to an access point in Forbury Rd.  Mr Dyer said access would be maintained for residents and local businesses.

Traffic control would be in place on Forbury Rd from Bedford St  and Victoria Rd to the Esplanade.

A detour to the Esplanade car park would run via Bedford and Beach Sts, and traffic would be able to enter the Esplanade from the Beach St end. Pedestrian access was being maintained around the site.

The four-storey apartment building has been reported as costing between $5.5million and $7million.
