Work has started on a six-to-eight-week job stabilising a 150-year-old wall in central Dunedin.

The historic bluestone wall, which runs parallel to Rattray and Dowling Sts collapsed, burying at least three cars and damaging surrounding buildings, during a deluge in August.

Dow Excavation owner Brian Dow said about four tonnes of bricks, bluestone blocks, railway irons and rubble needed to be removed from the site.

It was hoped by removing the unstable material a stable base would be uncovered and a solid retaining wall could be built on top.

The wall belongs to Bruce Fairhurst, the owner of the property above it.

The historically significant bluestone blocks will be salvaged and sold by an insurance company, and they are expected to be used in the construction of another building.
