Fertility decision delayed

The Southern District Health Board has again delayed a decision over whether to approve a controversial proposal to outsource its fertility service.

Chairman Joe Butterfield said the Otago Fertility Service proposal was discussed behind closed doors at the health board's meeting last week in Invercargill.

It would be considered again at next month's meeting, when a decision was possible.

''I'm not prepared to discuss the detail. The matter was discussed in committee, and I'm advising you that there has been no decision.''

Initially, staff were to be told the outcome at the end of May.

Faced with fertility service staff criticism the proposal document was flawed and inaccurate, the board pushed out the decision to the start of this month.

Yesterday, the board declined a request under the Official Information Act for the release of documents relating to the proposal process.
