Fire-damaged trawler to be scrapped

A boat severely damaged in a fire at Careys Bay two years ago is set to be consigned to scrap.

Fire ripped through the junk-filled vessel Neptune on the afternoon of January 2, 2012.

Port Otago commercial manager Peter Brown said the former North Sea trawler had been moved from Careys Bay to Dunedin's Kitchener St wharf.

The interior and fuel had been removed and ''the next step is to scrap it''. On Thursday, the vessel sank and was later refloated, he said.

Any money from scrapping the vessel would be returned to the port company, he said.
