Thieves with a penchant for curry and chocolate smashed their way into a Mosgiel foodbank on Wednesday night.

Michelle Kerr cannot understand it.

The Mosgiel Community Foodbank co-ordinator stood yesterday under a sign reading ''God Loves You'', as she pointed out the door which had been jemmied open, and where chocolate flakes and cookie crumbs littered the floor.

''If these people were hungry they only need to come through our open door,'' Mrs Kerr said.

''We will give them food and we won't ask questions.''

Now the foodbank was left with a bill of several hundred dollars.

In the adjacent hall she showed a roasting pan left soaking in the kitchen sink, following an apparent late-night meal of what appeared to be curried sausages.

The offenders might have worked up an appetite after playing with a nearby organ.

Mrs Kerr said the break-in on Wednesday night was a setback for the foodbank, which was always well supported by the local community.

''Our community will not be impressed; we have the most supportive fantastic community.''

Constable Tim Coudret, of Mosgiel, said it appeared ''very hungry'' youths might have been involved.

''It is just disgusting someone would break in to a voluntary organisation that does such a wonderful job for the greater Mosgiel community,'' Const Coudret said.

Police were following a number of inquiries.
