A local health organisation is providing free vaccinations to help senior Māori and Pasifika get ahead of the flu season.

To help fill the gap for Māori and Pasifika aged 55 to 64, WellSouth, the primary health organisation for Southland and Otago, is providing free influenza vaccines.

The flu vaccine became available on Monday and many people in Otago and Southland are eligible to get it for free.

All people over 65 and those who have long-term medical conditions such as diabetes, asthma and heart conditions, or long-term mental health conditions, are eligible.

Using the one-off Covid-19 fund, the Ministry of Health funded free vaccines last winter for Māori and Pasifika aged 55 to 64 — but this funding has ended.

Clinical director Dr Carol Atmore said WellSouth believed there was value in senior Māori and Pasifika getting the flu vaccination and decided to fund them locally.

"Given Māori and Pacific people experience a greater illness burden at a younger age than NZ European people, and often live in multi-generational households, this was seen as a great targeted service to promote health in this population group.

"We looked at the percentages and funding available and have made the decision to fund the shortfall and ensure that high needs group is covered this year."

About 1000 people are eligible for the fully funded vaccine and can get it from their general practice or local pharmacy.

"Whether you are eligible for a free vaccine or not, I strongly encourage everyone to get their flu vaccine — and their Covid booster if they are eligible."

The cost for those not eligible is between $25 and $45.
