Freshwater cost $2m to ORC - Dean

National MP Jacqui Dean estimates a $2million Otago ratepayer price tag could come with new Government freshwater regulations, but the Otago Regional Council says costs and funding have not been set.

The council has said a ''rough estimate'' 30 to 50 new staff will be needed for proposed Government requirements.

Ms Dean said this week at a ''conservative estimate'' this would cost ratepayers $2million more.

''That doesn't include the extra accommodation in Dunedin, Alexandra and Cromwell the council may face as it grapples with providing more office space for the extra staff.''

The Government had ''weighed down'' the council with ''onerous and labour-intensive water regulations'', she said.

Council chief executive Sarah Gardner said while the Essential Freshwater package was still under consultation, the council expected there would be a cost.

''How we fund that work and resource is not yet determined, and will be part of annual plan discussions with our new council.''

Submissions for the Government's proposal, which outlines its plans to improve the quality and quantity of freshwater in New Zealand, close at the end of the month.
