Fulbright award winners announced

The latest round of Fulbright Graduate Award winners has been announced, with 22 scholarships presented to New Zealand's best and brightest tertiary graduates.

Seven went to students with ties to the University of Otago who will travel to Maryland, Indiana and Massachusetts in the United States to further their studies in their respective fields.

Dunedin-born Rachel Fairhurst will study towards a master of arts degree in peace studies, specialising in peace building, development and human rights, at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana.

She will be joined there by Laura Woods, now of Auckland, who will work towards a PhD in organic chemistry.

Otago graduates William Perry, of Christchurch, Sara Burgess, of Palmerston North, Natalie Coates, of Whakatane, and Rosemary Wyber, of Wellington, will all travel to Harvard University in Boston.

Mr Perry will complete a master of public health degree in health policy; Ms Coates a master of law in human rights and indigenous law; Ms Wyber a master of public health in global health specialising in factors associated with the success of rheumatic heart disease control; and Ms Burgess will research the link between endospore production and biofilm formation by thermophilic bacilli as part of her PhD.

Nicholas Fancourt will head to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore to specialise in children's health and health systems.

The Fulbright programme, established in the 1940s, funds around 8000 exchanges annually in over 155 countries.

Fulbright New Zealand is jointly funded by the United States and New Zealand governments and is governed by a 12-member board of directors split between the two countries.
