Strong paint fumes led to a gas leak scare in central Dunedin this morning.

Two Fire and Emergency crews from the Dunedin Central Fire Station were called to a suspected gas leak in George St across the road from the Wall Street mall, just after 10.30am.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman Rewai Grace said paint fumes coming from a nearby construction site were determined to be the cause of the smell.

A reporter at the scene said there was a distinct solvent smell in the area.

WorkSafe was notified as a precaution, Mr Grace said.

Two fire engines were used to block of a section road for a short time while firefighters investigated.

The road is now open and the fire crews have left the scene.
