The fundraising campaign to pay the surgery bill of a guinea pig reached its target yesterday.

Thomas, his hutch and bowl were stolen from the front yard of the Pettigrew family home in Glenleith  on Sunday night.

The  pet was found in his home yard in Garden Pl on Tuesday with injuries including a ruptured eyeball and swollen back.

The ODT reported  the family had decided to have the 3-year-old guinea pig  euthanased because of the cost of surgery.

A Givealittle fundraising campaign was started about 9pm on Thursday to raise the $1000 needed for Thomas to have  the operation on Monday.

The  target was reached just after noon yesterday.

Nathan Pettigrew said the campaign was "quite exceptional".

"There are some amazingly generous people out there."
