Twenty passengers on a cruise ship were experiencing norovirus symptoms when it visited Dunedin on Sunday.

According to a passenger, an outbreak had occurred on Noordam after it visited Sydney.

Southern District Health Board was notified of norovirus affecting passengers of a cruise ship over the weekend, and its on-call health protection officer investigated, SDHB medical officer of health Dr Anura Jayasinghe said yesterday.

About 20 people were experiencing symptoms during the time the ship was in Dunedin.

"They were cared for onboard, and Public Health South provided advice for containing the illness.''

The ship departed on Sunday evening.

Norovirus is the most common viral cause of gastroenteritis worldwide and is a significant cause of outbreaks, particularly in confined environments.
