Wind gusts up to 143kmh left Dunedin glaziers run off their feet repairing windows in the city yesterday.
A MetService spokesman said wind gusted to 143kmh at Taiaroa Head at 4am yesterday, and at 3am speeds reached 96kmh at Dunedin Airport and 91kmh in Dunedin city.
The warm gales were caused by a high to the north of Otago which created strong northwest air flows over the region.
Glaziers in Dunedin received an influx of calls from residents needing windows repaired after wind caught open windows and doors and slammed them shut.
The weather is expected to be calmer today, but strong winds are forecast tomorrow night.
