Beans and pumpkins of epic proportions were among many "unusual vegetables" that cropped up in Waitati at the weekend.

More than 700 people turned up to the annual Blueskin Show Day yesterday, held at Bland Park by the Blueskin A&P Society.

President Matt Sumpter said the day was a showcase of local businesses and community groups and some of the money raised would go towards the maintenance of Bland Park.

It had been a "fabulous day", he said.

"A lot of people will turn up to catch up with friends and family and there's lots of food, there is live music, so it actually is a really nice way to spend the day."

Among the activities on offer for children were a bouncy castle, pony rides, face painting and a magician.

Waitati resident and Dunedin city councillor Mandy Mayhem said the Blueskin Bay Garden Club usually held a produce section at the community day.

They could not this year, so she had stepped in to help with some spontaneous certificates and prizes.

"There were some really unusual vegetables, so I was glad I did it."

Waitati resident Sapphire Grant, 6, won the award for biggest pumpkin, with a nearly 70cm-long kumikumi.

She also won prizes for her 37cm batch of runner beans and a display of dahlias.

Ms Mayhem said a "really pointy cabbage" also made an appearance and most unusual root vegetable was a "very gnarly-looking potato".

"[It] had every angle you can imagine, pretty comical."
