Senior Sergeant Darryl Lennane, of Dunedin, said officers spoke to a ‘‘visitor’’ in relation to a report of a woman defecating in a gutter in Vogel St about 8.30am on Sunday.

‘‘She conveyed to police that she was extremely remorseful for her actions.’’

The case was now closed, he said.

Business owner Nik Black said a white camper van broke down outside his workshop in the street on Saturday and he discovered the faeces on Sunday night and reviewed security camera footage.

A spokesman for the French Embassy in Wellington asked tourists to obey New Zealand laws and regulations, apply common sense and display good manners.

Was she asked to go and clean up the mess? Why was there no penalty? NZ is such a soft touch for freedom campers. This is why they do things like this.

No, she is only sorry she was caught, she should have been fined at the very least.

I agree, Dakota. Why were there no charges laid? Both the police and the DCC could have laid charges, but didn't. The ODT has been a failure also - for not asking the DCC and police about their slack attitudes. The reporter has not even directly acknowledged that no charges have been laid.
