Tie-dye dresses, tarot cards, kaleidoscopes and henna tattoos - it must be a travelling gypsy fair.

A circle of house trucks parked on the Oval transformed the Dunedin sports ground into a playground for three days, starting on Saturday.

The Gypsy Extravaganza has been travelling across New Zealand since September 26 and will continue its journey until April 24 next year.

Extravaganza co-founder Mel Berg, of New Plymouth, said it was the first time the fair had stopped in Dunedin and it had been a success.

The Gypsy Extravaganza would return to Dunedin about the same time each year, she said.

''We are always going to be here in spring.''

Local musicians were encouraged to sing on a stage at the fair and were given a donation for performing.

The fair had 23 stallholders in Dunedin but was set to grow, with another family due to join the group at its next stop in Christchurch on Saturday.

More families were expected to join in Motueka, Nelson and Wellington, she said.
