Stay safe on the water in Dunedin this summer, Otago Regional Council harbourmaster Steve Rushbrook says.

Boat users needed to take care of themselves and be mindful of others on the water, especially when multiple water activities were taking place in close proximity, he said.

"It's vital that caution is taken when crossing one of our many coastal bars.

"For those who don't have local knowledge and experience, I would strongly encourage them to do their research to gain a firm understanding of the local conditions before setting out on a passage across the bar.''

Mr Rushbrook started the role as the harbourmaster in late October and vowed to promote best practice on the water across the region and to review signage, "refreshing'' it where necessary.

"I want to ensure that our signage is clear, informative, and caters to conditions that may be specific to a particular area.''

Council maritime bylaws were being developed and would be open for public consultation next year, he said.

"The main priority of these bylaws is to improve the safety of everyone engaging in water activity throughout the region.''

The safer boating code:

• Wear your life jacket.
• Take two waterproof ways to call for help.
• Check the marine weather forecast.
• Avoid alcohol.
• Be a responsible skipper.
