At the helm

Dunedin boy Nathan Smith (7) captains a radio-controlled boat from the pond shore at the Otago Model Engineering Society open day yesterday.

Guests could use or view hundreds of models and gadgets, including electronic boats and cars, at the St Kilda club rooms.

They were also treated to the society's signature miniature train ride.

Society vice-president Jim Woods said the day was "not too bad", but cold morning weather seemed to put some people off.

The club's series of open days will continue until Sunday.
