The second floor of the Loan and Mercantile building will be filled with a mix of lanterns, music, projections and performance for five days from Tuesday.
Dunedin Midwinter Carnival Summer Lights artistic director Hannah Johnstone said lanterns would be displayed in four themed sections to create an "intimate space and cohesive experience" in the former grain store in Thomas Burns St.
Watch out for frog and fish lanterns in the "pond" room, a snow queen in the "cloud" room and swirling leaves in the "wind" room. Projections by Lady Lazer Light (Erica Sklenars) would be on display in the "cave" room.
Musician and composer Kerian Varaine was producing a "soundscape" for the event and musician Alastair Galbraith would perform on the final two days.
A troupe of performers from Brophy Aerials Dance School would cavort among and above the lanterns.
The event was suitable for people of all ages but patrons would need to navigate a flight of stairs to see the installation.
The entry fee was to raise funds for a more permanent place to display the organisation's lanterns, Miss Johnstone said.
"These lanterns need a home."
