A Brazilian football supporter stunned by several German goals wanted the horror to end.
Dr Carolina Loch, of Florianopolis city in southern Brazil, said she watched the five quick German goals with 50 people in The Bog Irish Bar and hoped it was a nightmare.
''I expected to wake and find the game had not started.''
The 7-1 loss was ''totally unexpected'', but her team had played like ''amateurs''.
The Brazilian people would be ''crushed'' and many would be too upset to go to work, she said.
Her boyfriend, Nathan Keen, of Dunedin, said he was prepared to face a roller coaster of emotions from Dr Loch this week.
Dr Loch said despite the disappointment yesterday, she was proud of her country for hosting a fantastic competition.
Now, she would support fellow South American team Argentina.
Her friend, DJ Zanicotti, of Curitiba, disagreed: ''I will support the Netherlands. Argentina, never.''
Mr Zanicotti said the result would influence the result of the Brazilian general election in October.
Longtime Brazilian supporter Prof Lucio Goncalves, of Rio de Janeiro, said he had never seen a Brazilian team take such a comprehensive beating.
However, he hoped the result would bring the desperately needed change in Government in the hope it would curb the rampant corruption in Brazil.
Bog manager Adam Richan said the games which attracted the biggest crowds to the bar involved England, United States and Brazil.
