The thrill of the hunt attracted about 200 hunters to the Mornington Tavern's annual stag and boar hunt over the weekend.

People from all over Otago participated in the event in bush around the region, culminating in a weigh-in at the tavern.

The hunt got under way at 7am on Friday and finished with the weigh-in about 3pm yesterday.

Two of those hunters were up-and-comers Charlie (8) and Rhys (6) Johnston, of Dunedin, who were keen to get their hands dirty and canvass the catch.

"We go hunting with my mum's boyfriend and we shoot heaps of rabbits,'' Charlie said.

The pair participated in the kids section last year but were unable to this year, so they really enjoyed the weigh-in, he said.

Co-organiser Mike Dougherty said he was pleased with the turn out to the weigh-in and said the unseasonably warm weather had made for "happy hunters''.

Mornington Tavern hunt organiser Steven Smith said numbers were down slightly on last year but he was happy with how the competition had gone and thanked the sponsors of the event.

Out of the 31 teams and 16 individuals, Team Strathwrath won the overall prize for the heaviest combined fallow deer, stag and boar weighing in at 264.8kg.
