Just how much is acting and how much of it is real?

It is the question the audience will be asking themselves when Dunedin husband and wife acting duo Blaise and Sarah Barham play the lead roles in a new romantic comedy called Wonderful, which will premiere at the Playhouse Theatre, in Dunedin, next week.

It is the latest work of award-winning Dunedin playwright Richard Huber, and tells the story of "the divine Lady Hermione" and her loyal butler, Roberts, as they grapple with the important issues of English modern life in the notorious roaring 1920s.

Mr Barham said the characters had grown up together and when someone proposes to Hermione, it pushes them into a moment where they have to confront their feelings for each other.

There is also a catch — the class system.

"It asks the age-old question of all great love stories: What is the price of following your heart, and are you willing to pay it?"

Mrs Barham said while there were a lot of intimate moments in the play, it also had some fiery arguments at times.

"Being husband and wife, it makes it very much easier to stare lovingly into each other’s eyes and get very close to each other."

However, she declined to comment on whether her character got to say some things she would really like to say to her husband off stage.

"I’m not saying anything about that."

The play is Huber’s second in a planned trilogy of plays. The first was the nationally acclaimed 1930s American screwball comedy Glorious.

Huber’s career began in Christchurch in the early 1980s with Theatre in Education, Splinta Stilt and Christchurch Playback Theatre Company.

But in 1993, he moved to Dunedin and taught theatre at the University of Otago for 16 years.
