Lab test plan hits snags

It is unlikely private patients will have to start paying for laboratory tests until next year, as Otago health bosses and Southern Community Laboratories work through unexpected snags to introduce the cost-saving scheme.

The move, which will see the Otago District Health Board stop paying for laboratory tests ordered by specialists for private patients, is expected to save about $1 million.

Regional planning and funding officer David Chrisp told board members at this week's meeting the change was not likely to happen until next January.

"The more they have looked into the logistics of modifying their processes and systems, they have encountered more and more difficulties that are going to cause some delays in getting the thing up and running."

It was important a proper process was put in place as the laboratory would have to invoice patients and did not want to lose income because of bad debts.

The change is still subject to the board approving the implementation plan and a report is expected at the next meeting.
