Michael Findlay attends the launch of the multimedia exhibition The Castle Story at Larnach Castle in Dunedin on Thursday night.

The Otago Polytechnic design lecturer explored the archives of Larnach Castle and worked with the Barker family for several months researching, curating and designing the exhibition, which charts the story of the historic castle’s restoration from 1967 to present day.

The exhibition, which opened to the public yesterday,  includes never-before-seen footage of castle life from the past 50 years of the Barker family’s occupation of the castle.

Snapshot of the old, rough and tumble, shabby genteel, pre Barker days:

A funny man operating ghostly FX, by banging on the bath and calling 'I am the ghost of William Larnach!'

The lions were huge, but we were little. There was no brown Windsor soup. The ballroom, always the most interesting, even to the very young.

Someone said 'Ken John Peel?', which was not a name, it was an introduction to the dance?
