Toitu Otago Settlers Museum is gaining evening visitors.
Thursday late nights have proved popular at Toitu Otago Settlers Museum, attracting 1690 people since the redeveloped museum reopened to the public in December.

Museum director Linda Wigley said the late nights had been successful since they were introduced when the museum reopened after the completion of its $37.5 million redevelopment.

Extending opening hours from 5pm until 8pm on Thursdays was part of the museum's outreach approach, aimed partly to attract people who were unable to visit during the usual weekday hours, organisers said.

And museum organisers have offered visitors a range of attractions in the Josephine Foyer: live music performances in January, a series of public talks in February and the chance to play board games this month.

An average of 120 people have attended the late nights, live music proving the most popular attraction so far, organisers said.

Early next month, the museum will switch to 4pm weekday closing for the rest of autumn and winter, but late Thursdays will continue throughout the year.
