Late voters’ options narrow

Dunedin residents who have not yet voted in the local body elections can brave the elements and deliver their ballots by hand to various sites this week.

However, options have begun to narrow ahead of the Saturday noon deadline.

It is now considered too late for people to post their voting forms, as they may not arrive in time to be counted.

Orange collection bins in parts of the city will be available until noon tomorrow.

They are located at any Dunedin City Council service centre or library, Otago Museum, the University of Otago, Otago Polytechnic, Toitu Otago Settlers’ Museum and participating New World and Pak’nSave supermarkets.

Dunedin deputy electoral officer Clare Sullivan encouraged people who had not yet voted to avoid leaving it until the last minute.

"Get your votes in, and get them in soon, to have your say in the future of our city," Ms Sullivan said.

"It’s too late to pop them in the mail, but we have plenty of other options for voters."

The Civic Centre’s election office, located on the ground floor, is available through to the Saturday noon deadline.

Its opening hours had been extended earlier in the week, but it would close at the usual time of 5pm today due to the weather situation.

People who have not yet enrolled to vote will need to cast a special vote.

A travelling special-voting booth is in the Link at the University of Otago today and the South Dunedin Community Pop-Up Library in Hillside Rd tomorrow, until 4pm.

Voter turnout in Dunedin is so far slightly down on the equivalent times in 2019 and 2016.

Turnout was 27.8% as of Tuesday, compared with 28.4% in 2019, 28.9% in 2016 and 22.8% in 2013.

The final turnout was 45.6% in 2019, 45.2% in 2016 and 43.5% in 2013.

More than 26,000 votes have been cast in Dunedin in 2022 to date.

The final week of voting has coincided with a cold snap in the South.

The Dunedin City Council did not anticipate major disruption to the election caused by weather, but encouraged people to vote sooner, rather than later.

Plans are in place to accommodate last-minute voters.

Election officers will be in the Octagon on Saturday morning collecting voting returns from motorists.

Traffic management will be in place, including temporary P5 car parks outside the Civic Centre.
