Workers of contractor Lund South demolish the upper sections of the concrete walls in the Water of Leith between Clyde and Forth Sts this week.

Otago Regional Council engineering manager Ramon Strong said the contractors were lowering the walls and repairing the concrete weirs to reduce flood hazard.

''The weirs provide a step and dissipate [water] energy and they provide cross-bracing to the channel walls. They serve a few purposes.''
