Man brutally assaulted in Dunedin

Police are investigating the brutal assault of a man "kicked in the face several times'' in Dunedin.

It was unclear what the victim was doing on Arthur St, but a taxi driver reported the incident via a 111 call about 10.55pm yesterday.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said the man was bleeding from his head when discovered.

"He [was] conscious, but not in a good way [when police arrived]."

The man then got aggressive towards people trying to help him and after he calmed down, police followed an ambulance to hospital, Snr Sgt Benn said.

A St John spokeswoman said the man had moderate injuries.

Anyone with any information about the assault should contact Dunedin police on (03) 471-4800 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555-111.
