A 20-year-old man will undergo surgery after suffering serious facial injuries in a "particularly brutal and cowardly attack" in central Dunedin.
Police said the man was walking along Moray Place about 1.30am yesterday morning when he was attacked by a group of four people outside Dick Smith Electronics.
The victim sustained serious facial injuries including a broken jaw. He is in Dunedin Hospital and will undergo surgery soon.
"This was a particularly brutal and cowardly attack, which appears to be totally unprovoked. We are very interested to hear from any one who witnessed this attack or who knows who was involved," Detective Sergeant Rob Hanna said.
The group was described as three Maori or Polynesian males in their late teens or early 20s and a female of a similar age also described as Maori or Polynesian.
The group was last seen running along Moray Pl towards Lower Stuart St around 1.15 to 1.45 am on Sunday morning.
