Road markings on Dunedin's Octagon carriageway have been changed to accommodate buses dropping off and picking up cruise ship passengers in the lower, eastern side of the carriageway as part of a Dunedin City Council trial.
Council infrastructure and networks general manager Tony Avery said the centre line had been moved and a 50m-long bus stop for cruise shuttle buses only had been introduced on the lower Octagon side.
As a result, some traffic signal phase changes and right-hand turn options at either end of the carriageway had been removed.
That removed the need for traffic management staff and temporary barriers, he said.
The trial would last for the cruise ship season, which starts on October 22, and would be reviewed next May.
During the trial, the council would assess traffic volumes and public feedback.
